This Spring, ADM High School students competed in the Iowa ProStart Culinary Competition in downtown Des Moines. This competition consisted of a cooking competition, a cake decorating competition and a business proposal competition. This year ADM only had a cooking competition team, but they plan to bring a team for each of the areas next year.
For the cooking competition, the students were required to create three dishes; one appetizer, one entree, and a dessert. For the appetizer, our creative culinary students chose to make a tropical shrimp skewer with a sweet chili sauce. For the entree, they created a garlic honey butter chicken, over jasmine rice with a side of parmesan encrusted asparagus. For the dessert, they created a lemon pudding crunch, which was a homemade lemon pudding layered with graham cracker crumble, and garnished with fresh mint. The students were given one hour to cook all of this. Once they were done cooking, their dishes were judged by a group of different chefs from around the state/midwest. The judges were very impressed with ADM’s menu and food for their first time competing.
Regarding their hard work and creativity, Mr. Kubiac stated, “I couldn’t be prouder of how the students did! They worked together to put together three amazing dishes, and learned a lot along the way. Now we know how the competition works and what to expect, so we are ready to hit the ground running next year!”
